Global agriculture is under a squeeze that shows up in every planning meeting: food production needs to rise as much as 70% before 2050 to feed a projected population of 9.1 billion, while the resources available to grow it — water, energy, arable land — aren't growing at all. Add tighter consumer demand for traceability, climate-driven risks like frost and disease, and a wave of new competitors in emerging exporting countries, and it's easy to see why the large agricultural players have all pointed the same direction. John Deere has described itself outright as "a Big Data company." Monsanto has estimated the data-farming opportunity at €15 billion over the years ahead.

Greenfield's AgTech division was built around that same premise: connect every data source on a farm — sensors, machinery, irrigation systems, weather forecasts — to one platform, and use it to help growers make better decisions with information they already have.

Everything routed into one dashboard

The SmartAPP pulls together nine categories of field data: soil, plants, labor, microclimate, regional weather networks, weather forecasting, on-field observations, irrigation systems, and lab analysis of leaf, water and soil samples. A compact datalogger — solar, battery or mains powered, depending on the site — measures up to 24 different parameters tied to crop needs and streams them to the cloud in real time, 24 hours a day.

What the platform actually does

Once the data lands, the cloud's algorithm engine goes to work. More than 100 models cover the aspects of crop management that matter most:

  • Water resources — vapor pressure deficit, multiple evapotranspiration models, and a personalized water balance calculated per block, per treatment or per tree.
  • Disease and pest risk — tuned separately for extensive crops like wheat, corn and soybeans; fruit and vegetables; and olive groves or vineyards.
  • Growth and production — degree days, cold hours, thermal integrals and phenological development, tracked against expected production capacity.
  • Meteorology — forecast deviation across multiple services for the specific microclimate, plus frost warnings out to 7 or 15 days.

Every model learns dynamically from the specific conditions of the farm and crop it's watching, rather than applying one static formula everywhere.

From dashboard to daily habit

The point of the system isn't the sensor hardware — it's what a grower does with what it shows. In practice that comes down to a handful of everyday benefits: alerts scheduled by SMS or email so nobody has to check the app manually; measurable savings in irrigation once water content and plant needs are visible in real time; and a fully digitized field notebook that can be downloaded with one click for regulatory reporting. Traceability, people management, production management and financial management all live inside the same app.
